Wazo Youth Engagement Forum, Bungoma County

In a significant stride towards youth empowerment, the National Youth Council (NYC) and Kibabii University have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) and launched the Wazo Youth Engagement Forum. This initiative aims to provide young Kenyans with platforms to access information, engage with leaders, and explore government opportunities.

The event, held at Kibabii University, was graced by Cabinet Secretary for Youth Affairs, Creative Economy, and Sports, H.E. Salim Mvurya, who emphasized the government’s commitment to youth development. He highlighted programs such as the Youth Fund Kenya, Uwezo Fund, and the National Youth Opportunities Towards Advancement (NYOTA) as avenues for economic growth and self-reliance.

“These forums will bridge the gap between youth and existing government initiatives, providing insights into skills development programs that can enhance their livelihoods while nurturing their passions, talents, innovation, and creativity,” said CS Mvurya.

Principal Secretary Ismail Maalim Madey underscored the importance of information, stating, “Information is wealth. Young people must be deliberate about staying informed to take full advantage of the programs in place.”

Bungoma Governor H.E. Kenneth Lusaka encouraged youth to be proactive, noting, “Opportunities often come disguised as challenges. Do not wait. Start something—support will follow.”

Deputy Governor H.E. Jennifer Chemtai Mbatiany praised the industrious spirit of Bungoma’s youth and urged them to use technology responsibly. “Use digital platforms to grow and create unity, not division,” she advised.

The NYC Youth Advisory Board Chairperson, Hon. Sophy Nekoye Waliaula, proposed that the Wazo Youth Engagement Forum be held quarterly to ensure continuous dialogue between the youth and policymakers.

The MoU between NYC and Kibabii University aims to foster joint initiatives and research focused on youth empowerment, employment creation, and addressing challenges affecting young people.

Kibabii University’s Vice Chancellor, Prof. Isaac Ipara Odeo, expressed commitment to youth development, stating, “We spend time with the youth and understand their aspirations. They are a creative and energetic generation that needs support to realize their full potential.”

The Wazo Youth Engagement Forum represents a significant step toward ensuring that young people are well-informed, equipped with skills, and empowered to contribute meaningfully to Kenya’s social, economic, and political development.

Other notable attendees included Hon. John Makali, MP for Kanduyi, and Bungoma County Commissioner Thomas Sankei.
